No doubt you’ve heard phrases like “it’s part of your soul contract” or “you came here for these lessons” - especially in spiritual or healing spaces.
So what do they actually mean?
In this blog, we delve deeper into these concepts to offer a clearer understanding of soul evolution, why we enter the human experience and how soul contracts are formed.
Before We Enter the Human Experience
Before we take on a human form we exist as consciousness (often called the soul) in a non-physical state of awareness. In this space, there is no body, no identity, only awareness, connection and understanding.
From this higher perspective, the soul recognises that growth does not happen through knowing alone. Growth happens through experience. The human experience offers something unique - the opportunity to learn through practice. Through emotions, relationships, challenges and choices.
Entering the human experience is part of a soul’s ongoing evolution. It is not about being perfect or reaching a final destination, but about learning, integrating and expanding through lived experience. Soul contracts are one of the ways this learning is supported before we arrive here.

Where the Soul Exists Before the Human Experience
Before entering the physical world, the soul exists in a state beyond time, judgement and limitation. In this space, awareness is expansive rather than personal. There is a sense of connection rather than separation.
From here, the soul is able to observe its own evolution - what has already been integrated and what is ready to be practised more deeply through experience.
Where Soul Contracts fit in
From this wider perspective, the soul identifies the themes it is ready to explore more deeply, such as self-worth, trust, boundaries, compassion, personal power etc. Soul contracts are then formed as energetic agreements that support these themes by creating the conditions for learning once the soul enters human form.
Rather than dictating specific events, soul contracts set the energetic framework for experience. They influence the types of relationships, situations and patterns that are likely to appear, while still allowing free will and choice within the human experience.
In this way, soul contracts act as guideposts, shaping the learning environment without removing autonomy. They exist not to limit us, but to support growth through lived experience.
Soul contracts are created to support these themes by bringing certain people, relationships and situations into our lives.
Co-Creating Agreements With Other Souls
Souls do not choose these experiences alone. Many travel in groups, often referred to as soul families. Within these groups, souls agree to support one another’s evolution by playing different roles - sometimes nurturing, sometimes challenging. People who bring in some of the biggest challenges into your life can be some of the closest people to you outside of this human experience.
This is why certain connections feel familiar or emotionally charged. These agreements are made from a place of clarity and cooperation, not obligation.
Why Some Soul Contracts Feel Difficult
From a soul perspective, difficulty is not punishment - it is feedback that supports its growth.
Some agreements are designed to bring unconscious patterns into awareness so they can be practised differently.
What feels challenging in the human experience often holds the greatest potential for growth.

The Purpose of Forgetting
When the soul enters the human experience, it does so without conscious memory of these agreements. This forgetting is intentional.
Without it, learning would remain theoretical. Forgetting allows choice, authenticity and real engagement with life.
Awareness can return gradually through reflection, healing and lived insight.
Free Will and Choice
Soul contracts create a framework, not a fixed outcome.
Free will determines:
How lessons unfold
How long they repeat
How deeply they are integrated
A lesson may be learned gently or through repeated experience.
If a lesson is ignored or avoided it often becomes louder each time, encouraging you to have awareness of and experience the lesson to close out this learning.

When Soul Contracts Become Active
Soul contracts often become more noticeable during times of change, such as:
Relationship shifts
Emotional challenges
Life transitions
Periods of inner awakening
These moments are invitations to practise awareness rather than react from old patterns.
Learning Through Practice, Not Perfection
The human experience is not about getting things 'right'.
It is about practice.
Practice in:
Choosing self-worth
Expressing truth
Holding boundaries
Responding with compassion
Reclaiming personal power
Soul contracts are part of a much larger design - one created with intention, wisdom and love.
You did not come here to be trapped by your agreements.
You came here to grow beyond them.
When awareness meets compassion, contracts can complete, shift or dissolve - allowing you to step higher into the life your soul intended.
