How to Work With Different Herbs Intuitively
Different botanicals carry different energies. Some cleanse deeply, others support intuition, grounding, emotional balance or mental clarity. Exploring beyond white sage allows you to choose a plant that truly aligns with your intention rather than using the same herb for every situation.
Below is a guide to some of the most commonly used smoke cleansing plants and how each one works energetically.

White Sage
White sage is often considered the foundation of smoke cleansing practices. White sage is best used when you feel a space or situation needs a full energetic clearing eg. moving into a new home, after illness, emotional release, significant change or after visitors have stayed.
Energetic qualities:
Strong clearing and purification
Removes stagnant or heavy energy
Creates a clean energetic reset
Because of its intensity, many people reserve it for intentional moments rather than daily use. It is also used in rituals and ceremonial practices to cleanse spaces, objects and people. Burning white sage can help clear negative energy from individuals, create sacred space for spiritual work and support emotional and energetic release during healing sessions.
Mugwort
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a perennial herb from the daisy family, native to Europe, Asia and North America. Mugwort has been used for centuries in folklore, traditional medicine and spiritual practices. Mugwort is often confused with Black Sage and labeled as the same thing - they are two different types of plants. Dried mugwort leaves are silvery-green, soft, thin and slightly fuzzy, often breaking easily. Stems are flexible and light.
Energetic qualities:
Enhances intuition and inner awareness
Supports dream work and subconscious exploration
Opens spiritual perception
Mugwort is ideal for meditation, ritual work, journalling or during energy work. It doesn’t aggressively clear energy like sage but instead invites you inward, making it a powerful ally for spiritual practices and self-reflection.

Black Sage
Black Sage (Salvia mellifera), sometimes mistakenly sold as Mugwort, is a different plant entirely. It belongs to the mint/sage family and is native to parts of California and Australia. When dried black sage leaves are darker green, thicker, more rigid and leathery. Stems are woody and sturdy. Bundles look denser and heavier than mugwort and the aroma is earthier and stronger.
Energetic qualities:
Strong cleansing and purification
Protection and grounding
Clears stagnant energy
Helps release heavy energy

Black sage works more like white sage in its clearing ability. Its smoke is used to cleanse spaces, objects or energy fields and to set protective boundaries. Shamans or energy practitioners may burn it before ceremonies, rituals or healing work to purify both the space and the participants. Its stronger, earthier smoke helps ground energy while still allowing spiritual connection, which is why it’s often chosen for deeper, intentional clearing.
Rosemary
Rosemary is both protective and clarifying, with a sharp, clean aroma. It’s widely used for mental clarity and focus as well as energetic protection.
Energetic qualities:
Mental clarity and focus
Protection and energetic boundaries
Memory and intention strengthening
Enhances alertness and sharpens decision-making
Supports purification of spaces and objects

Rosemary is excellent for workspaces, study areas or before important conversations or decisions. Burning rosemary can help clear mental fog, improve concentration and strengthen focus during meditation or planning sessions. Its protective qualities also help to maintain healthy energetic boundaries, making it useful when dealing with challenging environments or emotional situations. Rosemary’s cleansing smoke can be used to refresh spaces, objects or personal energy, encouraging clarity and emotional stability.
Lavender
Lavender blends gentle cleansing with emotional calm, making it one of the more soothing smudge options.
Energetic qualities:
Emotional balance and peace
Gentle clearing of tension
Nervous system support
Promotes relaxation and restful environments
Encourages a sense of comfort and emotional safety
Supports reflection, meditation and gentle self-care practices

Lavender is perfect for bedrooms, evening rituals or times when you want to feel held rather than energetically stripped. It can be used to calm anxious energy, reduce stress and create a serene atmosphere. Burning lavender during self-care routines, meditation or before sleep helps support emotional stability and a sense of inner calm. It is also often paired with other herbs when a softer, more nurturing energy is desired.
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is refreshing, expansive and strongly cleansing on both energetic and emotional levels.
Energetic qualities:
Clears heavy or stagnant energy
Supports emotional release
Encourages renewal and fresh perspective
Invigorates the mind and restores mental clarity
Opens spaces to new possibilities and movement
Supports emotional resilience and letting go of stuck patterns

Eucalyptus is often used when energy feels dense or stuck. Its crisp, sharp scent brings a sense of openness and movement, making it ideal for seasonal resets, clearing stagnant energy or after periods of emotional heaviness. Burning eucalyptus can also help refresh spaces, stimulate mental clarity and create an uplifting, revitalised environment.
How Palo Santo Is Different to Sage
Palo Santo, meaning holy wood, works very differently to sage. While sage is primarily used to clear and remove energy, Palo Santo is known for uplifting and inviting energy.
Rather than stripping a space back to neutral, Palo Santo helps to:
Raise vibration
Soother the energy
Invite calm, peace and positivity
Support meditation and emotional grounding

Its warm, slightly sweet aroma makes it popular for use after a space has already been cleared or when you want to gently shift mood and energy rather than perform a deep cleanse.
Many people use sage first to clear and Palo Santo afterwards to set intention and bring in what they wish to cultivate - such as peace, love or clarity. I like to start my sessions by smudging my clients with Palo Santo to help calm and relax their energy before we commence working in their space.
Choosing the Right Plant
Now that you know the different types of smudging options, you can expand your toolkit to use different herbs to suit your needs. Each plant carries its own unique qualities, allowing you to choose smoke cleansing methods that align with your intentions, whether you want to clear, protect, invite or nurture energy.
Working intentionally with different plants allows smoke cleansing to become more intuitive, respectful and aligned with your needs and your space.
Smoke cleansing is not about doing it ‘right’. It’s about presence, intention and connection - both to the plant and to yourself. When using any plant to smudge I always acknowledge the plants contribution and give thanks for its support and I communicate what I'd like its support with (you can do this in your mind while holding the smudge stick).
